Bid members cast doubt on York Park handover

Two members of Tasmania’s bid for inclusion in the AFL have voiced their opposition to Launceston Council’s decision to hand over York Park to the state government.

Ivan Dean and Greg Hall say the council acted too quickly, and say that ultimately it will economically weaken the state’s north.

They say the council made a decision before important questions were answered about the new stadium at Macquarie Point, and compared handing over the venue to “giving away the crown jewels”.

Launceston Council recently made the decision to transfer ownership, voting 8-4 in favour.

The Stadium will now come under control of the newly formed Stadiums Tasmania, recommended in a council-commissioned review in 2019.

Launceston mayor Matthew Garwood has previously said the council considered the cost of maintaining a tier two stadium, and decided the money could be better used at a community level.
