Passengers of Hobart’s hugely popular trans-Derwent ferry service are being warned they’ll have to shell out after its free trial wraps up.

Fares of up to $3.50 will apply for adults crowing between Bellerive and the city from August 8, although there’ll be a 20 per cent discount for green card users.

More than 520 people a day have hopped on board, for a total of more than 110,000 trips overall during the ferry’s 12-month trial.

“Having trialled the service fare-free for the first 12 months to help get passengers on board, we now need to assess the service as a real public transport option in the longer-term,” said a State Growth spokesperson.

“Continued uptake of the service also will play a significant role in determining the viability of expanding ferries to more destinations and at more times, which is currently being examined.”
