Authorities in the Sicilian city of Catania say they have uncovered a bizarre illegal dumping scheme involving a man and his small dog. CCTV released by the local municipality shows the dog trotting along a street with a bag of rubbish held firmly in its mouth before gently placing it on the roadside.

Officials say the footage was recorded on consecutive days, each time showing the dog following the same route as if completing a well‑rehearsed task. According to investigators, the owner had allegedly trained the animal to dispose of waste in unauthorised areas to avoid proper rubbish collection fees.

Local authorities reported that the behaviour left “no doubt” the dog had been deliberately coached. The videos quickly circulated online, sparking both amusement and frustration among residents who have long complained about unlawful dumping in the area. The footage also prompted an immediate search for the responsible owner.

The man was eventually identified and fined, though officials have not revealed the amount. They noted that, while the situation might appear humorous at first glance, the misuse of animals in illegal activity and the ongoing issue of roadside waste are taken seriously by the municipality. Many locals expressed sympathy for the dog, which appeared to be simply following instructions.

Catania authorities have used the incident to remind residents about proper waste disposal rules and the environmental impact of illegal dumping. They say the case highlights the lengths some people will go to avoid fees and the role community awareness plays in keeping city streets clean.
