Just when you thought your screen time was safe from high-pitched gibberish and over-the-top antics, the world’s most famous yellow henchmen are back. Universal Pictures and Illumination have officially dropped the final trailer for Minions & Monsters, and if the teaser is anything to go by, we are in for a delightfully chaotic ride.

This latest instalment marks the third film in the dedicated Minions spin-off series and—believe it or not—the seventh film overall in the massive Despicable Me cinematic universe. It seems the global appetite for these overall-wearing troublemakers shows no signs of slowing down.

A Quest for Stardom (and Survival)

The narrative for Minions & Monsters sounds like a fever dream in the best possible way. The film is being billed as the “totally true story” of the Minions’ rise to fame. We follow the tribe as they successfully conquer Hollywood and become genuine movie stars, only to lose it all in spectacular fashion.

In true Minion style, their attempt to regain their status leads to a slight oversight: unleashing actual monsters onto the world. The stakes shift from red carpets to global survival as the group must band together to fix the mayhem they’ve created. It is a classic redemption arc, just with significantly more slapstick and banana-themed mishaps.

The Creative Powerhouse Behind the Goggles

Fans of the original films will be pleased to see Pierre Coffin back in the director’s chair. As an Oscar nominee who directed the first three Despicable Me entries and the original Minions film, Coffin is essentially the architect of this universe. Of course, he also continues his iconic role providing the voices for the characters, ensuring that the “Minion-ese” language remains as authentic as ever.

The script is a collaborative effort between Coffin and Brian Lynch, whose previous work on The Secret Life of Pets suggests a knack for balancing heart with frantic energy. The production team, led by Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan, clearly has immense confidence in the project; the film was originally scheduled for a June 2027 release but has been fast-tracked by an entire year.

A Multi-Billion Dollar Legacy

It is hard to overstate just how dominant this franchise has become. To date, the Despicable Me and Minions films have raked in more than $5.6 billion at the global box office. The previous entry, Minions: The Rise of Gru, didn’t just earn $940 million, it became a cultural phenomenon.

Who could forget the “Gentleminions” trend? It saw teenagers across the globe donning suits to attend cinema screenings in a bizarrely sophisticated display of fandom. Whether Minions & Monsters will spark a similar social media movement remains to be seen, but the groundwork for a massive opening is certainly there.
