A hot, tasty bowl of pumpkin soup is hard to beat, especially on a cold winter’s morning.
It means even more if you’re homeless or hungry.
That’s why a large crowd is expected at City Mission’s Morton’s Place in Frederick Street in Launceston this morning.
The team has spent the last two days cutting up and preparing a donated 65kg pumpkin grown on a farm at Scottsdale.
The giant veggie has come via Ye Olde Greengrocer and Gastronomy Northern Tasmania, and is expected to find its way into as many as 500 meals as far afield as Burnie and across organisations including the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul.
Chef Chaya Rainbird says they don’t know how many will turn up for free soup made from the pumpkin, but everyone’s welcome.
“Everyone’s welcome,” she said.
“We don’t judge people. We don’t know how hard they’ve been doing it. If a bowl of this soup brightens someone’s day, that’s our job. We want this to bring a little joy and bring our community together”.
