It’s been a big year for development approvals at Launceston Council.

There’s been a 57 million dollar increase on the previous financial year.

The council approved 372 million dollars worth of developments in 2023-24 across residential and commercial sectors.

The increase comes despite the fact the number of approvals was done by 100 on last financial year.

Deputy mayor Hugh McKenzie said that was offset by the fact there had been an increase in the number of “high value” development projects, which included the University of Tasmania, hotel developers, Launceston General Hospital and TasWater.

“This has been a very positive outcome for Launceston in terms of job creating investment in our municipality and is one of the strongest results we’ve seen in the past five years in terms of monetary investment,” Cr McKenzie said.

“These figures demonstrate that the City of Launceston is open for business and is a ‘can do’ council when it comes to the approval of sensible, sustainable development.”
