The Greens are calling for whipping to be banned in the horse racing industry.

It comes from the party’s candidate for Bass Cecily Rosol ahead of tomorrow’s big race meet at the Launceston Cup.

She’s described the use of whips as “cruel and inhumane”.

But she’s been dismissed by both the Liberal government and state opposition, which say there are strict rules in place governing their use as specified by the Office of Racing Integrity.

It includes a minimum $200 fine for a first offence.

Ms Rosol says the rules need tightening up.

“That would include looking at the penalties and ensuring that they match the inhumanity of what we’re doing to horses,” Ms Rosol said.
