Future police officers will be able to stay in the state’s North to complete their training.
The first ever northern-based recruit course has been labelled a success, with 17 recruits on the way to graduate alongside their southern counterparts in November.
Assistant Commissioner (Specialist Support) Adrian Bodnar said the success of the pilot meant Tasmania Police was keen to continue the initiative next year.
“We’ve seen firsthand how beneficial it has been to give our northern-based recruits the chance to remain close to home while completing their police training, and it will be great to see them stationed in their home districts in a couple of months, when they graduate as probationary constables,” he said.
Classrooms at the University of Tasmania’s Newnham campus is set up with state-of-the-art technology, allowing new recruits to take part in live-streamed lessons to and from the Academy delivered by northern-based staff.
Police, Fire and Emergency Minister Felix Ellis has commended the success of the program.
“I hope from this we will see many people from Launceston, Burnie and surrounding regions consider policing as a career,” Mr Ellis said.
