Man charged with dangerous driving ahead of Road Safety Forum

A man in his 50’s has been charged and bailed, after being reported for dangerous driving.

Witnesses called police on Friday night, after a black Toyota Hilux ute was seen crossing lanes on the West Tamar Highway and nearly colliding with a vehicle travelling North towards Riverside.

A witness reported it to patrols and a male driver was found at a Riverside address and taken into custody for road safety offences.

The man has since been charged with high range drink driving and will face court at a later date.

Police are looking to speak to the driver of the vehicle that was nearly hit, or any witnesses in the area at around 7pm that night (26/09/2022).

Anyone with information or dash cam footage is asked to come forward and contact Launceston Police on 131 444.

Meanwhile, the Road Safety Advisory Council’s Regional Road Safety Forum has arrived in Launceston with the aim of reducing the road toll in Tasmania.

The Launceston forum tomorrow follows the first of the series held in Hobart last Thursday (25 August 2022) and will be followed by another in Burnie on Tuesday.

More than 40 people have registered for today’s Launceston forum, offering a local perspectives on what more can be done to reduce road trauma, as well as views on what is and isn’t working.

The ideas and contributions made at the forums will be considered as part of the mid-term review of the Towards Zero – Tasmanian Road Safety Strategy 2017-2026 and Towards Zero Action Plan 2020-2024.

The forum will run from 3:00pm – 5:00pm today at the Tramsheds Function Centre, 4 Invermay Road.
