A man is recovering after becoming injured while on a bushwalk north west of Lake St Clair.

The 64-year-old from Victoria activated his emergency personal locator beacon at around 9.20pm on Friday night after sustaining a minor injury and losing the main track in an area known as Labyrinth.

Search and rescue teams were deployed to the area, and the solo walker was located.

Police say the rescue was slowed by the walker switching the emergency locator beacon off in an attempt to conserve battery life.

The community is reminded GPS locator devices such as EPIRBs and personal locator beacons work best when sending a constant signal by leaving the device on and placing it in an open area with a view of the sky.
