Residents in a Dutch town got more excitement than expected when police were called to reports of what appeared to be a kangaroo wandering near local soccer fields. Officers responded to the sighting in Middenmeer, only to discover the animal was actually a wallaby on the loose.
According to local police, the marsupial was spotted hopping through the area and eventually made its way across busy roads, creating concern for both motorists and the animal’s safety. Officers admitted the unusual call was not something they expected during a regular shift.
The wallaby, named Skippy, proved surprisingly difficult to catch. Authorities followed the adventurous animal as it bounced through the town, turning the incident into an impromptu pursuit involving police and animal experts.
A veterinarian was eventually brought in to assist and safely sedated the wallaby, allowing it to be captured without injury. Soon after, Skippy’s owner arrived and explained the pet had escaped the previous night.
Thankfully, the escape ended on a happy note, with the marsupial safely returned home. The incident also highlighted the unusual status of wallabies in the Netherlands, where the sale and purchase of pet wallabies has been banned since 2024, although animals already owned before the rule change are permitted to remain with their owners.
