New icebreaker Nuyina, $500 million of high tech, is to sit idle in Singapore due to mechanical troubles.

The ship will miss the Antarctic summer season as repairs are hampered by global supply problems.

Antarctic Division Director Kim Ellis will turn to two other ships to fill the gap.

“It was anticipated the Nuyina would return in October this year and be able to commence commissioning work again, we now thinks it’s going to be next year.”

The Division’s Matt Filipowski clarifies what exactly has gone wrong.

“The couplings that connect the components of the propulsion system are very large components over a metre in diameter and 2.5 tonnes in mass and it is identified there has been some small hydraulic leaks in those systems.”
